Posted by Double MI'm fairly certain that what took hip-hop to next level in the late 90's was sampling of music from the 70's and 80's. Puff Daddy was the king of sampling, but if you look at the track credits for a lot of popular songs from that time (and even now for that matter) use some portion of a previous song somewhere. I'm pretty sure the entire Jamie Foxx cd was just a motown rip-off. Hell, there's even a blog out there right now (Hip Hop Is Read - its in our blog roll) that can give you an idea of all the samples in most new popular hip-hop cds.
But these guys...they're not sampling. Their just re-imaging.
How can they say performing it "like only The Blenders can"? That's like saying we're better than Motown or whomever made your soul music. Not since Eminem has a white guy so blatantly taken this music.
But really, I'm not mad - it is just good for a laugh.
Have a good week.
