Sasquatch Recap

Posted by MajorLB

Sasquatch is at the Gorge Ampitheater in George, Washington and is fucking B-E-A-utiful. There are two stages and a comedy/dance tent in edition to the main stage ampitheatre. I really didn't like the main stage which is a shame because there were some really good acts on it. The lawn was too steep to sit on comfortably for any length of time and the sound quality is not that great and the energy is just dead (at least during the day). Instead of being able to listen to Animal Collective I heard about a lesbian crush, fear of sexual inexperience, and how someone almost got into a fight from the girls behind me. So, while Animal Collective, The Doves, The Decembrists, TV on the Radio, M Ward, and Silversun Pickups were all very good they just weren't that grat of experiences. I now know to get closer or go stand at the front. Erykah Badu came across the main stage really well, too bad most people were at Girl Talk. And the Fleet Foxes were pretty awesome especially with the gorgeous scenery:

Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band
This was the first band I saw off the main stage and it got me excited to be at the music festival. Their matching vests are cute and I loved the chick's energy and the interesting percussion instruments. I wish the other guy would've sang more and that they would have actually had the chick's mic on from the beginning.

Bon Iver
This was probably my favorite set of Saturday and I'm quite pleased that I left the Yeah Yeah Yeahs for this. The had some technical difficulties which made them start super late and kept them from being able to play some songs (Woods maybe? which was sad), but overall I was super impressed with the way the album translated to a band and a live stage. If you haven't listend to his album or EP - DO IT and if you get the chance to them do that too.

When I was going back to camp (by myself because my friends are LAME) after a few minutes at Crystal Castles and Kings of Leon (I've seen them before twice as you know) I ended up on this access road and saw them loading up their gear:

Fences
This was enjoyable, but I wasn't super impressed considering all the good stuff I heard about this guy beforehand. Maybe it was the TERRIBLE sound engineering on this stage. He probably cussed at the feedback between every other song. It was a good lead-in to the nap I took during St. Vincent right afterward. (She was really good, but the blanket in the sun called to me.)

Of Montreal
Yes yes yes yes yes fuck yes. Why did I miss them when they came to Seattle? Oh right, I'm an idiot.

I happen to like the music (a lot), but even if you don't you sorta have to appreciate the show that Of Montreal puts on and I can only imagine how much better it is when not in a festival setting. There were many costumes (fogging jacket anyone?) and props and people in tiger masks climbing the scaffolding, but my favorite was actually the picture below. At first you're like "why are all this people coming on stage and taking pictures of the crowd and doing random shit?" and then the freeze in unison for a minute and you take a closer look and realize it's OTHER ARTISTS. Sweet! I know it's a shitty picture, but who can you identify. There's the guy from Fences in the front left and so is the chick from Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band.

Shoutout to M83 which played right before Of Montreal. I liked.

Horse Feathers
Biggest Regret - not getting my shit together in time to come and here there set. I only caught the last 1 or 2 songs as walked to Santigold when we got into the venue. Albina is probably one of my favorite songs. Seriously, check them out. I will definitely see them live if I ever get a chance.

Santigold
Santigold is the only artist I went down to the front of the main stage. It was suprisingly eay and I should have done it more often, but lots of the main stage acts (during the day at least) were more mellow and I was too lazy to stand for them. It made a huge difference though from my complaint above about the main stage. Sound and energy was better and Santigold rocked it even if it was mainly the songs from her album which you can hear all over TV (seriously I think 8 out of 11 were licensed for TV usage).

I also got to see a litte wrestling down there. I have no idea what this guy did because he got picked up in the middle of the crowd and security was trying to get him out of the crowd when I saw it. My favorite thing about this is how unsympathetic the crowd was. (now security didn't have tasers because that's a whole different thing I can rant on) This guy did something stupid and now a guy 3 times his size is wrangling him and yet he resists. One guy recording it did say "we gotta keep it fair" but otherwise people went and got other security and made joking comments to the guys whining. "What is he doing to me?" "He's gonna fuck you if you don't get up"

School of Seven Bells
I had never heard of these guys but I would go see them again in a dark venue because they definitely didn't look like they belonged in the sun.

What What

I saw this during the Knux (which was sadly meh) and stopped eating chicken fingers long enough to take a picture for those who will appreicate it. If you don't get it then click the links.

I actually like the Knux music and enjoyed when they did Bang Bang but after that there wasn't enough actual performing going on. As I walked away I heard them play MGMT from the sound system (and probably rapped over it) and that was enjoyable...

Other highight was Aziz Ansari. Fucking Hilarious! Except the Raaaaaaaandy stuff was meh but I'll still see Funny People.

Happy Birthday Royalcow

I saw Sasquatch and lived!

Posted by MajorLB

No, not that one. This one. 3 days, 2 nights of sweet bands and sleeping on the ground. It’s AWESOME. Except for the sleeping on the ground part. I’m not that prissy it’s just really cold and uncomfortable.

Unfortunately, the lineup was too good and I had to make some tough decisions that not everyone appreciates (no I did not see NIN, sorry). These are the bands I saw at least part of:

Saturday: Kings of Leon / Yeah Yeah Yeahs / The Decemberists / Animal Collective / Bon IverM. Ward / Doves / Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band / Arthur & YuCrystal Castles

Sunday: Jane's AddictionTV On The Radio / The Murder City Devils / of Montreal  / M83 / The Walkmen / St. Vincent  / Fences / Aziz Ansari

Monday:Erykah Badu / Silversun Pickups / Fleet Foxes  / Santigold / Explosions In The Sky / Girl Talk / Blitzen Trapper / The Knux / Monotonix  / Beach House  / School Of Seven Bells / Horse Feathers

Music ended pretty early (before midnight) so there was plenty of time for camper-sponsored raves and property destruction. Check back tomorrow for my highlights, but in the mean time enjoy Spin’s photos by the very talented Alex Crick and this little gem that occurred during The Decembrists. I wondered why everyone stood up and clapped mid song…

Yeah, the security guard does give a fist pump to the crowd.

This is worse than a Snuggie

Posted by Double M

I am firmly planted in the group of people that thought/think the Snuggie is stupid. But that isn't what this post is about. No, this post is about the wearable towel. What's the wearable towel? This:

If I ever see one of my neighbors wearing a toga out to get their mail I am going to immediately run outside and begin making fun of them mercilessly. And they'd need it because otherwise they wouldn't know they were dumb for buying one of these things.

Side note, the actors in this video are some of the worst. In the scene where the three people are laying out randomly in the middle of the concrete, the chick on the left just makes a bunch of hand and face gestures without saying anything.

...And We're Back with the Notorious BIG

We just cruised by a week where IR decided to take a collective siesta. But now we're back and what better way to return than with some Notorious BIG.

Really, I'm trying to punish myself

Posted by MajorLB

As you can see from the poll at the right, I lost the Immediate Regret TV station draft. Normally the punishment involves watching the worst movie on Rotten Tomatoes now playing and organizing the next draft (which turns out might actually be the worst part of the punishment).

Unfortunately, there really haven't been that many totally shitty movies out in wide release, but I have left the losing poll up to remind myself that I owe all you bastards who didn't vote for my awesome network lineup readers a shitty movie or some other form of pop culture torture.

Feel free to make suggestions, but right now I'm thinking a High School Musical marathon and a complete listen to the Heidi Montag abortion of an album.

If you really think I need to go to a theater to make the embarassment public then find a movie playing in the Seattle metroarea and I will do so.

Matthew Fox on Jimmy Kimmel: Even if you don't like Lost you'll like this video

Posted by Double M

Feel free to skip to the video if you don't watch Lost
I didn't really start watching Lost until season 3. This meant I got to watch the first 2 seasons in rapid succession. Then, ABC jacked around with us during season 3 showing like 6 episodes and then waiting and showing the rest of the season after a long break.

Of course, it was all rectified in Season 4 when they switched to the 24-esque, we'll just show you Lost in (almost) week-to-week format. The biggest problem with this format? You have to wait 7 months in between seasons.

Which brings us to last night. Lost's season finale was awesome, but, sadly, it means there is no more new Lost until January/February. So, if you're like me and you can't get enough Lost, you'll enjoy this (non-spoiler) video from Jimmy Kimmel Live last night featuring Matthew Fox.

Is Keyboard Cat the Greatest Cat Since Spaghetti Cat?

Posted by Double M

I have no clue where this came from, but videos featuring the Keyboard Cat have been popping up all over the mist lately. Not since the Spaghetti Cat have I been so excited about a random cat video. Someone tell me where this thing came from so I don't have to find it myself.

Anyway, in case you haven't been paying attention here is just a sampling of Keyboard Cat videos that have been showing up.

Just to get a taste of what I'm talking about, here's a video of the Keyboard Cat and Spider-man.

The next video was the first one I ever saw. I knew it would be a hit just from these 40 seconds.

Here's a video courtesy of the hombres at Dave & Thomas. FYI, this one contains an F-bomb.

The last one may be the greatest Keyboard Cat video simply because the guest on the Glenn Beck show makes it so awesome (H/T: Boing Boing).

Get Ready for Punch-Out

Posted by Double M

I'm very excited for the new Wii version of Punch-Out. Although I'm not in the "I'm going to go buy it the day it comes out" excited but more the "I'm going to read some reviews and if it is good I'll probably pick it up at some point" excited (because if it is basically the same game as the NES version that I've played for 1000000000000 hours, I'm not sure how much I'd enjoy it).

Anyway, here's a pretty good commercial for the game.

Why I Liked Star Trek

Posted by Royalcow

I have never been a huge Star Trek fan. I always liked Star Wars better and the only Star Trek show I ever watched with any sort of regularity was Voyager and that was mainly for Jeri Ryan and it happened to be on right after the Muppet Show in college. That being said I was very excited to see the new Star Trek movie. For the uninformed among us, here is the trailer (if you are using a reader you might need to click through to see it).

J.J. Abrams has been involved in so many project that I am a fan of (LOST, Cloverfield, Alias, hell he even directed an episode of The Office) that this movie couldn't have been bad. The very solid 95% on Rotten Tomatoes was very encouraging. Let's just say that my expectations were met, maybe even exceeded.

This is just a good movie. It was funny (genius casting Simon Pegg as Scotty), great action, and a great story. Of course they had to throw in a few old-school Star Trek references, but that really only added to the enjoyment of the movie.

Really the only thing left to do is advise you to see this movie and post the Onion video about it (again, if you are using a reader you might need to click through to see it).

Oh and no crap after credits on this one. Enjoy!

SNL: Justin Timberlake was Awesome

Posted by Double M

Justin Timberlake hosted SNL for the 3rd time this past weekend. It may have been the best first half of an episode SNL has produced in a long time.

Just to get it out of the way - in case you haven't seen it yet - here is the Timberlake/Samberg "Dick in a Box" follow-up called Motherlover.

That was very well done and about the best you could have asked for all-things-considered. I'm just excited that they mixed in a new song (one not on the Lonely Island cd). No more needs to be said since everyone else on the mist has already talked about it.

There were, of course, other skits on the episode. My personal favorite was a skit called "Immigrant Tale" where some immigrants were talking about what they want their great-great-great-grandkids to do. A Timberlake has an awesome vision of what their decedent will do including an awesome Britney joke.

Shorty's favorite skit was the one that shows the true talent of Timberlake. In a skit called "Surgery Center," Timberlake covers a bunch of pop hits with commercials for his surgery center. He also dances. While this skit may not hold up in 10 years (or even 10 weeks), it is really well done and I think you'll enjoy it.

That's about it for the great stuff. There were a few other filler skits that were funny and the opening monologue was pretty good. Ultimately, I didn't ever say, "man, this skit sucks" until the Weekend Update and if you can get to the half-way mark like that, you've got to be pretty happy with the episode.

Also, I usually don't embed musical performances, but for some reason Hulu included Ciara's performance of Love & Sex & Magic featuring Justin Timberlake. Fair warning, this should probably have the NSFW tag depending on how cool your place of employment is.

John Tesh: Genius

Posted by Double M

If you've ever had to go on a long road trip, you know you've stumbled across John Tesh's radio show where he gives out *sometimes questionable* life advice. Something about his voice just draws me in.

Anyway, I didn't know this until a recently, but John Tesh wrote the initial NBA on NBC theme song (I felt like I've posted this before, but whatever). Here's how he "came up with it." I loved that damn theme song (so much so that I loved a mediocre rap song by Nelly called Heart of a Champion that was basically a remixed version of the song). Anyway, in case you haven't seen it, here is John Tesh performing Roundball Rock.

Why am I referencing Roundball Rock? Because this video started showing up all over the mist and I needed a lead-in to post it.

And with that...have a good weekend.

Coldplay and Sting may be drunk when they perform

Posted by Double M

If you watched Family Guy this past weekend you saw this awesome clip featuring Sting.

Funny because it is true.

And while Family Guy's joke is funny it is only 20 seconds. Meanwhile, someone went to a lot of trouble to show you why Coldplay is ridiculous.

Now someone just needs to mix in a little Lou Holtz and we can have rambling all across the board.

Full disclosure: I like both of the songs sung in this post.

Puke in my Mouth

Posted by Double M

This video has been all over the mist the last few days and normally I wouldn't post anything like that. But just in case you haven't seen it, here is a chick version of the genius Jizz in my Pants called Puke in my Mouth.

Honestly, the puke in my mouth action from that first girl was awesome. No matter what you think of the song, you should laugh at that part.

The Hunt for Gollum

Posted by Royalcow

I had posted about this previously but wanted to let all you Lord of the Rings fans out there know that The Hunt for Gollum came out yesterday. I would embed it below, but they seem to have disabled that. Oh well. Go ahead and click through to the video and enjoy!
